Oscar De La Hoya to be honored with own day in Las Vegas Sept. 13

De La Hoya on Future of Golden Boy

Saturday, Sept. 13, will not only be a big day for hall of fame boxer Oscar De La Hoya because his promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions, will be co-promoting the big Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Marcos Maidana rematch in Las Vegas, he’ll also be honored by the city with his own day.

As part of Las Vegas’ kick off to its Mexican Independence Day celebrations Sept. 13 will be proclaimed “Oscar De la Hoya Day” by the city and state of Nevada.

In a ceremony to be held just a mile south of the MGM Grand, at the world famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign, where the big rematch will be held, a ceremony will take place to honor De la Hoya and all the tourism revenue he’s helped generate for Sin City.

During the Golden Boy’s 16-year boxing career, he fought in Las Vegas in 27 of his 45 professional fights and generated almost $1 billion for Las Vegas’ tourism revenue.

The event will kickoff at 1 p.m. PDT at the famed sign on the Strip and will be another honor earned by the former six-division champ.

De La Hoya was inaugurated into the 2014 International Boxing Hall of Fame earlier this year, won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and was a 10-time world champion in six different weight division throughout his career.
