De La Hoya speaks on Golden Boy’s future, Mayweather, IBHOF and more

De La Hoya on Future of Golden Boy

With all of the changes going on at Golden Boy Promotions these days everyone is wondering: “What’s up Oscar?”

Well, Oscar kind of had an answer addressing media at the open workouts for this weekend’s Showtime triple header headlined by Robert Guerrero versus Yoshihiro Kamegai , but really didn’t say anything at all.

With longtime CEO Richard Schaefer and COO Bruce Binkow leaving the company, major shake-ups are expected in wake of those moves.

Most feel that with Schaefer out of the picture at Golden Boy that bouts between their fightes and those of rival promoter Top Rank will now be able to set up big time fights. Those fights between the two companies top stars were put on hold for a few years when the two started what is known as boxing’s “Cold War’.

Most of the beef was between Schaefer and Top Rank’s Bob Arum and with De La Hoya becoming more and more involved once again after being out of the spotlight for over a year battling substance abuse issues, it appears cross promotion cards are going to heat back up.

De La Hoya said that he is willing to work with any promoter to make the best fights and it remains to be seen if some of the bouts that have eluded us in the past several years come to fruition with Arum and De La Hoya’s newly rekindled cordial relationship.

Saying that he wants to make the best fights possible is great, but with Schaefer’s departure resulting in boxing’s cash cow Floyd Mayweather Jr. ending his working relationship with Golden Boy, they will miss out on the two biggest paydays of the year if “Money” holds true to his statements.

Mayweather has been co-promoting his bouts with Golden Boy promotions, but his company does not have the manpower Golden Boy does, so it is going to be interesting to see how Mayweather’s proposed September date is promoted without enlisting the help of larger promoting entity.

De La Hoya mentioned that announcements regarding what the company’s plans are going forward will be released soon, but until then no real questions revolving around Golden Boy Promotions were answered and we will have to play the waiting game a little longer before the picture becomes a little clearer.
