MMA Training with Ryan Bader- The Double-Leg Takedown

By Mike Schmitz

Ryan Bader may be fresh off of a stunning loss to Tito Ortiz at UFC 132, but the light heavyweight still knows a thing or two about MMA training, especially take downs. In this video provided to us by TapouT VTC, Ryan Bader shares his know how in the online MMA training video shown above. The light heavyweight demonstrates the high double-leg take down, which lessens the risk of getting submitted or stuck under the opponent.

The former All-American collegiate wrestler and his partner Andre Maracaba break the move down into three easy steps:

1. Lure the opponent into throwing a predictable right jab. From there, duck under the jab and step in toward the opponent with your lead leg.
2. Lead with your head outside of his right side rather than his left, which you would do when executing a normal double-leg takedown. This keeps you higher up on his body and lessens the risk of a guillotine.
3. Finally, drive your shoulder into his stomach, grab behind his knees to sweep his legs out from under him and explode through to drive the opponent into the ground.

You can also execute the move after throwing a hook. Once you throw the hook he tosses his hands up to protect, and you take advantage by driving into his stomach and executing the double-leg takedown. The double-leg takedown is simple, yet an extremely essential part of MMA training.
