Las Vegas judge allows Mayweather to fight on May 5, will not start sentence until June

A Las Vegas judge has granted Floyd Mayweather Jr. an extension on when to start his sentence for his guilty plea of misdemeanor battery charges. Mayweather’s original date was scheduled to be January 6th, though in court Mayweather’s lawyers pleaded that the date be pushed back, citing contractual obligations for a already scheduled May 5th fight. The judge surprisingly granted the request and assigned a new date of June 1st. This will allow Mayweather to fight on his already scheduled May 5th date. The judge required Mayweather to fulfill all obligations minus jail time such as domestic violence counseling, meetings and community service as a stipulation in order to fulfill his request to push his sentence time back. It was made clear that if Mayweather were not to fulfill or miss a meeting that he would be immediately be summoned to jail.

The May 5th date now opens up a potential bout with Manny Pacquiao, though Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had already made it clear that four opponents are in line for his star fighter, which include Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley and Lamont Peterson. It was expected that Mayweather would begin his sentence today and it remains to be seen if Arum will now change his current plans for Pacquiao.
