The man who Adrien Broner idolizes, Floyd Mayweather Jr., spoke up in favor of his friend who was handed his first loss as a professional Saturday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas when Marcos Maidana beat the former champ via unanimous decision.

Mayweather took to his Twitter and posted:

“@AdrienBroner hold your head up champ. I love you. A true champion can take a loss and bounce back, my lil brother .”

The gesture was a classy one on Mayweather’s part as he could of stayed quiet and let the media and fan onslaught of words continue with only Broner to defend himself.

Broner showed some heart in fighting back from the second round knockdown–which was the first of his career–and fought back, but Maidana’s power proved to be too much for the 23-year-old star.

The bout marked Broner’s second fight at the welterweight limit of 147, and it appears that his power that he had in lower weight classes hasn’t translated with the increase of weight. He isn’t exactly as focused on staying on top of his game when he is in between fights, as made clear in Showitme’s All Access episode of Mayweather-Saul Alvarez where it showed Broner boasting about his stomach being larger than usual.

Staying focused and in shape at all times is one of many things he could take away from Mayweather’s work ethic, as he has been known to be in fight ready shape almost year-round.

With how poorly Broner handled his first loss leaving the ring before being interviewed, it will be important to tone down his brash attitude and know when to turn it on and off as Mayweather has said many times before.

A Broner-Maidana rematch looks like a good possibility and with the huge win Maidana’s name has been thrown into the Mayweather sweepstakes and it will be interesting to see what unfolds in the coming months.
