UFC 144: Frankie Edgar vs Ben Henderson Preview and Picks

The UFC will bring a massive amount of star power to Japan this Saturday, February 25th when UFC 144:Edgar vs Henderson kicks off. The UFC hasn’t been to Japan in 12 years and this is the biggest UFC event the country has ever hosted. Below are the picks for the highly anticipated main event match.

For the UFC Lightweight Title: Frankie “The Answer” Edgar vs Ben “Smooth” Henderson

Frankie Edgar has handed 5 fighters their first loss, defeated BJ Penn twice and KO’d Gray Maynard, the only fighter to have ever defeated him. He has been able to beat several bigger, stronger fighters thanks to his stellar cardio, wrestling, stand up and ground game. But his secret weapon is that he has huge heart, the guy just doesn’t give up no matter what situation you put him in. Saying that Frankie Edgar is an all around good fighter and that his mental game is solid would be a serious understatement.

Ben Henderson is a former WEC lightweight champ who defended the belt 2 times. He has the ability to be smooth wherever the fight goes. Ben is super athletic, powerful, and can be very explosive. His 3 fight winning streak which includes victories over submission artist Jim Miller and crazy cardio brawler Clay Guida, landed him a spot to contend for the UFC lightweight title.

Let’s see what the BetDSI Sportsbook UFC odds are on this match to check out who the oddsmakers picked as the betting favorite:

BEN HENDERSON PKEV
FRANKIE EDGAR -130

The opening odds had Frankie Edgar as the betting favorite but now the odds are even. Either way, I predict most people are going  with Frankie to win. Egdar is insanely agile and very technical. He is a compact human Swiss army knife equipped with an assortment of some of the best tools a fighter can posses.  After he defeated the legend BJ Penn twice and survived getting pummeled by Gray Maynard in the first round of the last two fights with him; I just can’t see Ben Henderson being able to steal the belt.

I see Ben being able to put Frankie in dangerous situations but you need to do more than seriously damage Edgar if you want to take his belt, you have to put him away. Edgar has never been KO’d or submitted and that is saying a lot if you consider the high level fighters he has touched gloves with. Henderson has been submitted once but has never been KO’d. But when you throw Frankie Edgar into the mix, never…means…NOTHING! I am going ALLLLLL the way with Frankie Edgar to defeat Ben Henderson.
