Shields confirms fight with Georges St. Pierre

Jake Shields has confirmed his UFC 129 title shot with current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. The formal announcement was made today via his twitter and simultaneously announced by UFC officials.

The championship affair will take place in Pierre’s home country of Canada on April 30 at The Rogers Centre In Toronto. This will be Pierre’s fifth title defense in a division he has just about cleaned out. His last performance was a dominated unanimous-decision win over Josh Koscheck at UFC 124. A win over Shields would mean a completely cleaned out welterweight division for the champion.

Shields, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion recently made his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann and was awarded a split decision at UFC 121. Many fans felt that the match should have gone to Kampmann. The number one contender is currently on a 15-fight win streak with wins over Dan Henderson, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley, Nick Thompson, Mike Pyle, Carlos Condit and Yushin Okami.
