Dana White talks Jon Jones-Daniel Cormier brawl: ‘I would have separated them’

At the UFC 178 media day, all hell broke loose when UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones and No. 1 contender Daniel Cormier got into an all out brawl during the tandem’s first stare down ahead of their scheduled title bout in September.

When watching the video of the brawl you may have noticed that UFC president Dana White was not present, and instead UFC PR director Dave Sholler was between the two feuding behemoths.

Of course by now you know that Sholler’s attempt at breaking up the brawl was futile as Jones shoved him to the floor in pursuit of Cormier.

Dana White, who recently returned from vacationing in Bora Bora, spoke with UFC.com about the brawl:

As soon as Jones went up and their bodies touched, I would have separated them. Sometimes you’ll see me put a hand in, or sometimes you’ll see me do something else. I would have separated them. It was the head butt, Jones headbutted Cormier – that’s what upset [Daniel] and made him push him back. I would have got my arm in there before that contact was even made. I would have seen the contact coming and I would have stopped it. Then I would have been right in the middle. Would I have stopped that whole thing from going down, who the f**k knows? I wasn’t here.

You have to believe that if Dana was present at the UFC 178 media day that brawl would have never happened. Then again, if that brawl did not happen would the hype ever have reached the level it is at now?

Unfortunately the highly anticipated title fight was postponed this week due to Jones’ incurring a torn meniscus and sprained ankle. Jones had successful surgery yesterday and will hopefully be 100% by the time he takes on Cormier at UFC 182 in January.
