Jon Jones to have surgery tomorrow following injury, full statement

JON-JONES-CROUCH

The UFC took a huge blow yesterday when the most anticipated fight of the year was postponed due to the UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones incurring an injury during training.

Jones was set to take on bitter rival Daniel Cormier in the main event of the stacked UFC 178 pay-per-view on September 27th. Unfortunately, while training with heavyweight Alistair Overeem yesterday, Jones suffered a torn left meniscus and sprained ankle.

The injury will require surgery, as Jones revealed in his statement today:

Hopefully the surgery will not provide any complications and Jones will be fit to return to the Octagon in January to take on Cormier at UFC 182. Of course, Jones’ initial opponent Alexander Gustafsson is none too happy about the postponement, as he made clear today.

UFC 178 will now be headlined by the flyweight title bout between Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Chris Cariaso
