Recently crowned IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook was stabbed in the leg Thursday while on vacation in Tenerife, Spain and is recovering in a area hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries according to The Telegraph.

Brook got into an altercation around 6 a.m. that lead to the stabbing and now the big homecoming bout that is scheduled for Dec. 6 is in question.

After undergoing surgery, Brook’s tainer, Dominic Ingle gave an update on the welterweight champion’s condition.

“He had an operation after the stabbing,”  Ingle, told BBC Radio Sheffield (h/t BBC.com). “I think it was about an hour-and-a-half, he’s now stable and on the mend.”

Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn explained that although the December fight date might be in jeopardy, the most import thing is getting Brook back to 100 percent.

“Obviously this is a severe disruption to his plans,” Hearn said. “But we wait for more information and we will assess the injury and hopefully after a couple of weeks it will be healed and he will be able to start training. At the moment Dec. 6 is looking unclear, but really the thoughts at the moment aren’t about fighting again, we need to make sure he is OK.”

Taking time off after his big victory over the then undefeated Shawn Porter last month, Brook was on vacation with his partner, who is pregnant with their second child.

Police confirmed there was a stabbing incident and gave a few more details on the attack that sent Brook to the hospital.

“This morning a 28-year-old British man was stabbed at Golf del Sur in San Miguel de Abona. He was stabbed in the left leg and is hospitalized. He lost a lot of blood. There are no arrests at this time and we are investigating.”

This is not the first time Brook has been involved in a stabbing incident. In 2007, he suffered serious injuries when was attacked by a group of men after leaving a nightclub in his hometown of Sheffield, England and needed treatment for knife wounds to his side and buttocks.

This incident not only could effect his Dec. 6 bout, it could also put his British showdown with Amir Khan in doubt next year as the two were to meet if they both win their prospective fights in December.
