Chavez Jr. returns to action in Mexico on January 29

The undefeated and world ranked Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will return to the ring on Saturday, January 29 in his hometown of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico to take on Billy Lyell in what figures to a great homecoming for the son of the legend who has not fought at home in over four years.

“It has being a long time since I fought home and I am looking forward to give the fans a fight to remember. It always important to give the fans a great show, but when are home the expectations are been greater,” said Chavez Jr., today in Mexico City in a press conference. Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) of Culiacan, Sinaloa, will take on Lyell (22-8, 4 KO’s) in the 10 round main event of a boxing card that will be dedicated to his father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. who has been elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York and will be held at the Soccer Stadium in Culiacan.

“I have great admiration for Chavez Jr. father, and I know he has a lot of talent, but this is a great opportunity for me and one that I will take full advantage off,” said Lyell. In the co-main event female world champion Jackie “La Aztec Princess” Nava will also be in action in a card the will be televised by Fox Deportes in the United States. Freddy Roach and Alex Ariza the trainer and conditioning coach for Chavez Jr. were also there, along with WBC world champion, Tomas “Gusano” Rojas and three-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera and Mexican premier promoter Fernando Beltran.

Rojas is due to defended his 115-pound title on February 5 in Japan and Barrera returns on February 12 in a “Top Rank Live” show to be telecast in the US by Fox Deportes. “This is my last year in boxing and I want to make a memorable one by fighting for a and winning a fourth world title,” said Barrera. If everything goes well, there is hope that Chavez Jr. will be fighting for the world title in the summer.

“I know I have too look great and get a victory to prove to everyone that I am ready to fight for world championship,” said Chavez Jr. Roach and Ariza will stay with Chavez Jr. in Mexico to get him ready for the fight.
