Freddie Roach feels Miguel Cotto should fight at 147 instead of 160 given recent weight loss

Since moving over to The Wild Card Boxing Club, we have heard nothing but good news and improvement from Freddie Roach on his new pupil, Miguel Cotto. From the video we have seen from his media workout yesterday, the dangerous Cotto left hook seems to be back in play as it became a underutilized tool in Cotto’s arsenal in recent fights. Cotto looks to be reinvigorated as he is now sporting a slimmer physique than in previous training camps.

Roach says it is testament to Cotto’s work ethic and that he works out just as hard as Manny Pacquaio, running 8 miles daily from the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles to his end point and even at times continuing to run all the way to The Wild Card. Because of this, the pounds have been coming off as Cotto weighs in at 159lbs three weeks out from his 154lbs bout with Delvin Rodriguez. Crazy right? The weight is coming off so quickly that Roach has advised he not run as much.

Ever since Cotto choose to reappear on HBO for this bout, we all immediately thought this was a set up to face Sergio Martinez in a big Puerto Rico vs. Argentina type PPV sometime in 2014. The bout would of course be fought at 160lbs, but Roach feels his new padawan can make welterweight again given his weight loss, “He is on a better diet and I think he is working a lot harder. We cut down on the road work a little bit, I don’t feel he needs to run everyday. I told him he’s coming down a little bit too fast and he told me he is eating everything he can. That is why when people say maybe 160 I think sometimes he may be better off at 147.”
