It became pretty apparent that Canelo Alvarez was way in over his head as he faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. last Saturday night in a packed MGM Grand. Alvarez said he had a game plan to pressure Mayweather and throw jabs and straights, but like 44 other opponents of Mayweather found out, it is not that easy once you are in the ring with him.

Too much, too soon you can say. The 23 year old Alvarez just did not have the experience to keep up with Mayweather nor the boxing pedigree in which Mayweather boasts a Olympic medal and stellar amateur career. Freddie Roach was rooting for Canelo, but Freddie knows and the hall of fame coach knew he was in way over his head, “Canello is a good young fighter. I think he is still young and immature. I don’t think he is quite at his peak yet, I think he will learn a lot more. He is a little bit flat footed, slow with his hands. It is a good fight for us in the future if it were to be made.”

Fight for us in the future? Roach is talking about a potential Canelo vs. Cotto match up, one in which could free much be a possibility given Cotto’s free agent status and the two being in the same weight division. Boxing has had a great year so far and we can only hope this match up gets made in 2014.
