You could not find a happier Freddie Roach when it comes to the progress of his newest pupil, Miguel Cotto. Since the two linked up in August, Roach has been quietly working like a mad scientist on tweaking Cotto. Almost two months in and both Roach and Cotto report that huge steps have been gained in this partnership that will see Cotto thru the end of his career.

One obvious change is Cotto’s physical appearance. He seems a heck of a lot more slimmer now, citing that he has been doing a bit more roadwork. So much so that Roach has advised him to cut back on it with the Puerto Rican fighter looking like he could make another run at welterweight. At Wednesday’s media workouts we caught a glimpse of the two working together as Cotto fired off combinations and to the delight of hardcore Cotto fans, we a special emphasis on that deadly left hook.

It has been sometime since we have seen it be used as a effective weapon in the former champions arsenal, but Roach is making a point in camp of bringing it back for this bout with Delvin Rodriguez, ” His punch count has gone up. His combinations are a lot better, the left hook to the body I’m bringing back and it’s working really well. His camp so far has been very good. I told him last night he is a little bit light and that he has to eat more. He told me he is eating everything he can. He is on a good diet and the work ethic is unbelievable.”

From the looks of things, Cotto seems reinvigorated and maybe Roach was that little extra push in the ass he needed at this point of his career. Hear more of what Roach has to say on training Cotto below!
