Amir Khan will fight May 3, but it won’t be against Floyd Mayweather Jr. as he had hoped after winning the pound-for-pound king’s “Who Should Floyd Mayweather Fight Next” poll.

Khan will face off with Luis Collazo on the undercard of “The Moment” fight card from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. headlined by Mayweather-Marcos Maidana.

The fight is being viewed by many as an audition fight to see whether or not he is worthy to face Mayweather in one of his future bouts.

Mayweather has faced fighters that have been featured on undercards of his fights, a move that helps build the fighters buzz heading into their bout.

Khan (28-3, 19 KOs) is already a known fighter to those who follow the sweet science on a casual basis, and he could help his shot at getting a career-changing fight with Mayweather with a dominant performance May 3.

This will be a tough task against Collazo (35-5, 18 KOs), as he is coming of a knockout victory over former Mayweather foe Victor Ortiz in January and will be looking to add another name to his list of victories. Four of Collazo’s last six victories have come by early stoppage, so he has adequate power to test Khan’s questionable chin.

Collazo has not been so successful when he made step ups in competition outside of Ortiz (if it could be called a step up at this point) losing to Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosely and Andre Berto to name a few.

The addition of the Khan-Collazo bout makes the May 3 fight card that much bigger as star in the making Adrien Broner is scheduled to fight Carlos Molina on the card as well. It was rumored that Khan and Broner would face each other May 3 to have Khan earn his shot a Mayweather that way. But concerns of Broner not being ready to fight at welterweight after his lackluster showing against Maidana last year showed he may have made the jump to 147 pounds too soon.
