Freddie Roach: A Manny Pacquiao-Canelo Alvarez bout possible at 150 pounds

Roach on Pacquiao-Canelo

Manny Pacquiao realistically only has a handful of fights left before he likely calls it a career and focuses on politics in his native Philippines.

With that being the case fighting big name fighters is a must for Pacquiao to please the fans and his pocketbook in the process.

Pacquiao’s longtime trainer the legendary Freddie Roach said he likes the idea of a Saul “Canelo” Alvarez showdown for “Pacman’s” next bout sometime in November or December.

With Pacquiao expressing that he does not want to fight at the junior middleweight limit if 154 pounds a catchweight will be necessary.

Canelo went down a couple of pounds to 152 pounds to face Mayweather last September and the former titleholder didn’t seem to have any issues at shedding the extra weight. With Roach saying a 150-pound weight limit is doable for Pacquiao, Alvarez would have to agree to that and with him looking to fight three times in 2014, an end of the year showdown with Pacquiao would create quite the buzz.

With fans wanting a Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. megafight that will probably never happen, pitting the two best of the generation against the same opponents in the next best thing to gauge who is the better fighter.

Since Mayweather gave Alvarez an amazing boxing lesson in their bout, if Pacquiao was to struggle at all fans would claim Pacquiao has no chance with Mayweather and the majority of fans would have Mayweather’s back.

If Pacquiao wins easily then the demand for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight would only increase and make the opening of the MGM/AEG arena on the Las Vegas Strip in 2016 all the more enticing for the bout that would be six years in the making at that point.

With Mayweather presumably going for that elusive 50-0 record and the megafight the world has been waiting to see finally happening, there is no doubt the numbers for the bout would be one that might not be reached ever again in the sport. Sure, it’s a long shot, but fans won’t stop wishing for the fight until the two fighters are long gone from the sweet science.
