Frank Shamrock: “Strikeforce death in the long run is good for MMA.”

Although Frank Shamrock can be a pretty goofy guy at times, I get where he’s coming from as far as the death of Strikeforce. Maybe it’s because I’m going through the five stages of death still (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) considering the corpse of Strikeforce is barely two months old, but it’s a wide-open wound on the MMA universe and it hurts. But beyond the obvious pain of losing the organization he had so much invested in over the last half decade, Frank is celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of Scott Coker’s company with great joy. He knows that Strikeforce has laid the groundwork for future successful fight organizations, and therein his legacy beyond just being a fighter is now steered towards helping MMA as a whole, rather than hustling to stay afloat against the UFC.

We talked to Frank Shamrock as he was supporting the debut of Bellator in California, and it was a fascinating interview that looks back and to the future of MMA. Watch on.

“It restricts the talent growth and options in the industry, but conversely you have one group tied to a future, and there are guys that want to look outside that box. As frustrating as it is to see the industry consolidate itself, it’s due for a rebirth and new growth.”
