Frank Mir vs. Alistair Overeem has been pushed back a few months, here’s why

August 31, 2013. A day, that will live in infamy. Well, not really, but it was the day that Alistair Overeem was knocked out by Travis Browne and Frank Mir was knocked out (or wasn’t, who knows?) by Josh Barnett. Despite Mir saying he wasn’t knocked out, debasing Josh Barnett’s win, it seems that he was indeed knocked out and the NEvada State Athletic Commission wants both Overeem and Mir to take their time recovering from these injuries before they step into the cage.

Mir and Overeem were supposed to fight in about 6 weeks at UFC 167, but now that’s changed to UFC 169, the Super Bowl weekend card that will also hold the light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira.

It’s a bummer, UFC 167 was looking amazing, but hey, I will take a stacked Super Bowl card as well. I’m not picky.

The UFC issued a statement:

While there was no indication whatsoever that Mir wouldn’t be fully, medically cleared in time to compete on November 16th, UFC officials and Nevada Commission representatives believed that a short postponement would allow both athletes more time to train for the bout.
