Arum says Cotto-Canelo talks are ongoing

Arum on Cotto-Canelo

Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum has been know to speak of somethings that don’t pan out in the end, but on the subject of Miguel Cotto versus Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the boxing world can only hope that Arum’s words are more than just hot air.

The proposed bout is rumored to be shooting for a May 2 date, one that would make for an interesting scenario as it would be going up against the king of pay-per-views, in Floyd Mayweather who should  also fight on that same date if his recent fight date plan stays the same.

With Cotto’s resurgence under hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach, the fighter many were ready to write off, even though he is just 33 years old, because of the brutal nature of many of his bouts, has seen some of his best performances of his career as of late.

Despite being clearly outclassed by Mayweather in his bout in September 2013, Canelo’s career wasn’t affected much and he still is one of the sports biggest rising stars and a bout with Cotto would be huge at the gate and on PPV.

With Canelo’s proposed December fight date with Joshua Clottey being called off before it was even announced after Canelo suffered an ankle injury, Alvarez making his first fight of his new HBO deal against Cotto is the way to go for the network.

Add all of that to Arum mentioning that the winner would possibly face the man many are ducking at the moment in Gennady Golovkin should he beat Marco Antonio Rubio Saturday night as expected and we could have a solid 2015 to look forward to fight-wise after a fairly disappointing 2014.
