Mayweather vs. Maidana ll: Both fighters hoping experience from first bout pays off

With their much anticipated rematch a little over a month away, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana can’t wait to continue where they left off in May.

The two fighters had their affiliate days earlier in the week and gave updates on their camps and thoughts on the upcoming battle at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Sept. 13.

As the majority who watched the first bout saw, Mayweather and Maidana were even through the first few rounds, but Mayweather’s uncanny ability to adapt during a fight helped him sway the bout in his favor late, en route to his majority decision win.

“The first fight was action packed for the first four rounds before I took control. He has the will to win like I do,” Mayweather said.

With Maidana having his country of Argentina behind him, which was very apparent in May, Mayweather explained the clash of the countries makes this a big event.

“He’s a tough competitor and he has Argentina on his back—and of course I represent the red, white and blue so we must give the fans what they want to see… It’s another blockbuster,” Mayweather explained.

Despite the loss, Maiadna didn’t find Mayweather as tough as his 46-0 record would state and will head into the second bout with Money—a rare occasion, as Mayweather has only granted a rematch once before— with more confidence knowing he held his own through the 12-round affair.

“I don’t know if I’d say this will be easier because even the first one, I didn’t find [Mayweather] very difficult,” Maidana said. “But I already know him and I think it’s a great advantage that I already know Mayweather because he hasn’t given a lot of fighters the rematch.”

With Mayweather being the face of boxing for the last several years he is used to the increased media attention that comes with a fight. Maidana is not as accustom to it and despite his uncomfortableness with it, he knows it is a must for the fight.

“I don’t like the media attention, but I have to do it. It’s part of my job for the fight and for the promotion,” Maidana stated. “I think more attention is coming because Mayweather is very well known and when you give him trouble and give him a good fight people start to recognize you.”
