It was a shocking main event last night at The Stub Hub Center as veteran hard punching Jhonny Gonzalez reclaimed his WBC featherweight title by knocking out friend Abner Mares in the first round of their Showtime main event. Both fighter had practically not even warmed up as Gonzalez landed a perfect left hook in the final minute of the first stanza.

Mares, showing true heart and grit got right back up and continued to fight instead of clinching. This ultimately would be his undoing as on still shaky legs he was caught with a flurry of punches that sent him down to the mat for the second time. The referee in charge had seen enough and Gonzalez scored what was the biggest upset of the year so far in boxing.

Our man Marcos Villegas was able to catch up with Gonzalez as he talks what it meant for him to reclaim his title after everyone doubted him and his decision to use the left hook instead of boxing Mares as originally planned.
