Freddie Roach talks Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. leaving The Wild Card

So, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is an interesting case for a fighter. There is no doubt he has immense talent, and he shows flashes of absolute brilliance in the ring at times. He is the son of arguably the greatest Mexican boxer of all time, a fighter who completely embodies what it means to a Mexican Champion…hell his nickname was The Great Mexican Champion, but Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. he is not.

His entire career he has been followed by rumors of questionable work ethic and a lack of dedication to his craft. Even when he was training with the legendary Freddie Roach, some thought that it would help kick him into gear and start taking things more seriously. Freddie Roach details some of the problems that he had with JCC Jr., he mentions that he was planning to work with JCC Jr. for his upcoming fight, and the plan was for him to come to Wild Card for 4 weeks and then go to Mexico, where the fight was originally going to take place and then train there for two weeks.

The only problem is, JCC Jr. never showed up and didn’t even give Freddie Roach a call. Roach found out via the internet that he was leaving The Wild Card gym. He also mentions that he would’ve left him during the training camp for the Sergio Martinez fight if it wasn’t for his father begging him to say.

Freddie goes on later to say

“He’s using Alex Ariza as his coach. I hope he isn’t using him as his boxing coach because he doesn’t know what the **** boxing is.”

This all speaks volumes coming from Freddie Roach himself, here’s to hoping that JCC Jr. gets his head on straight and reaches his potential.
