Don’t be stupid bro! These are the words of Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. in regards to his son fighting above his contracted super middleweight bout against Brian Vera. Chavez Jr. and Vera are set to face off this Saturday at The Stub Hub Center on HBO with the major part of the story line concentrating on what weight Jr. will fight at. Both men signed to fight at 168lbs, but on Tuesday his father told ESPN Deportes that he did not think his boy would make 168lbs. Then the next day Top Rank founder Bob Arum flatly said on a teleconference call that the weight was being worked out. Fast forward to yesterday at the final press conference in which Arum said the weight will be figured out at the weigh in while Jr. says he will weigh in somewhere between 168 to 173.

Yup, this is really happening. But if you think this is unprofessional or a prima donna complex by Chavez Jr., his father thinks your dumb. Why? Because his son has been out a year and he is a big dude. Which he really is for being Mexican..like look at his dad and then look at him? No joke, Jr’s head could probably make the lightweight limit in which his dad competed in.

Agree or not, Sr. wants you to know there is no point in squabbling over this, the fight is not even for a title. Yup, lets just make every fight a catch weight unless it is for a title.

Boxing is a very very strange sport.
