Saul “Canelo” Alvarez put on a spectacular performance against the tough Alfredo Angulo as he scored tenth round TKO stoppage in controversial fashion. The crowd of 14,610 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena heavily booed Canelo and referee Tony Weeks showing their displeasure by throwing beer and bottles in the ring.
Canelo bounced back impressively. wanting to take away the impression of being blown out to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September. He came out swinging in the first two rounds, establishing to Angulo that he had just as much firepower as the Mexican slugger. Canelo would adjust in the middle rounds as he moved in and out, landing combinations at will with Angulo eating everything that came his way.
Round eight was by far the most memorable of the fight as both fighters went back and forth and taunted each other for more. Angulo was particularly susceptible to uppercuts; He just had no answer for them the whole fight. In round ten, as Angulo ate another well timed single uppercut, his head popped back and Referee Tony Weeks finally stopped the fight to save Angulo from further punishment. The time of the stoppage was (0:47) in round ten.
Amidst boos and heckles Canelo spoke the a quiet angry crowd, “I could have fought another 10 rounds. The stoppage isn’t my problem.” Angulo was visibly upset with the stoppage and said he could of kept fighting. Though Weeks first and foremost job is to look over the safety of a fighter inside the ring and he had seen enough from the other nine rounds of punishment the Mexicali born fighter was receiving.
