Abner Mares Open to Charity Bout With Mikey Garcia

Even though Abner Mares (Golden Boy) and Mikey Garcia (Top Rank) may never meet in the ring in a meaningful fight due to the biggest problem in boxing, promotion company rivalries, the next best thing would be seeing the two in a exhibition match for charity.

Mares’ idea is not a bad idea, as seeing him and Garcia in a bout that is a glorified sparring match doesn’t seem to great by itself, but helping out charity is always a reason to make something happen.

Mares (27-0-1, 14 KOs) is a two-division champ and currently holds the WBC featherweight title and is quickly on the rise on most pound-for-pound lists.

Garcia (32-0, 27 KOs)is a heavy-handed multiple time champion himself and looks like one of the sport’s future stars, as his record and KO ability is sure to keep fans backing any fight he’s in.

If the two did a charity match and had a solid turnout and buzz around it, it could pave the way for a real fight, with titles on the line in the future.

IF and that is a big if the fight is ever made it will likely be at something other than the 126-pound featherweight division, as Garcia failed to make weight in his last bout with Juan Manuel Lopez.  Garica said he plans to move the 130-pound junior featherweight division in his next bout, so it would take Mares jumping up a division to make the fight possible.

For the sake of the sport, let’s hope the two see each other in a meaningful bout in the near future, as if the two don’t fight, it will be another great bout lost to silly the silly promotion company war that has plagued boxing for the last several years.

Currently Mares is preparing himself for his first 126lbs title defense against the former holder of that belt Jhony Gonzalez on August 24th at The Stub Hub Center in Carson, CA. If victorious in that bout, we hope we get our wishes and see some sort of match come thru!
