After being away from the sport of boxing since getting his jaw broke in June 2012 Victor Ortiz had a lot to prove Thursday night on Fox Sports 1’s Fight Night, but Luis Collazo had other plans, knocking out the former WBC welterweight champ in Round 2 of their bout.

After looking pretty good in Round 1 Ortiz (29-5, 22 knockouts) and Collazo (35-5, 18 KOs) went back and forth in Round 2, then toward the end of the round Collazo caught Ortiz with a vicious counter right that sent Ortiz stumbling to the canvas and partially out of the ropes. After a 10 count was administered to Ortiz who was down on his knees the whole count, the fight was waved off.

Ortiz had hopes of maybe landing another shot with Floyd Mayweather Jr., but with a loss those hopes went out the window.

Ortiz is slated to appear in the action movie “The Expendables 3” and may want to reconsider returning to boxing, as he hasn’t won a fight since April 2011 when he beat Andre Berto for the WBC welterweight strap.

Collazo has had an up and down career, especially over the past seven years going 8-4 in his last 12 bouts, losing every time he stepped up his competition. Those losses include Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosely and Andre Berto to name a few.

After what could be called his marque win, Collazo should look to build momentum off this big win and try to string together a few quality wins. After the win Collazo called out Mayweather, but there is no chance Mayweather will face Collazo, so let’s end that talk right there.
