Conor McGregor’s rise up the UFC ranks has been unprecedented, and it looks like the No. 5th ranked Irishman will be getting a title shot in his next UFC go-around.
After obliterating his “toughest test” in Dustin Poirier in just under two minutes last weekend at UFC 178, McGregor was calling for a shot at the title after Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo throw down at UFC 179 later this month.
Not only is McGregor being flown out to Brazil to sit cageside, but Dana White recently noted that McGregor is more than likely next in line for the title shot.
“Here’s the thing: If you go down the list, every one of those guys has fought Jose Aldo already,” White told UFC.com in his weekly interview. “Conor hasn’t. So who do you line up next for the champ other than Conor? Everybody else has fought him.”
Although there is seemingly a stipulation that McGregor will only get the title shot if Aldo leaves with the belt at UFC 179, you have to believe that either way McGregor will be getting the next crack at UFC gold.
With top contenders Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar set to face off at UFC Fight Night 57 in November, the timeline works out perfectly for the UFC to give McGregor the next shot at the title.
