Former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is set to make his long awaited and highly anticipated UFC debut in just two weeks time at UFC 178 against the red hot Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Alvarez, who was recently released by Bellator after a nearly two year long battle with the promotion, made his debut in the UFC rankings this past week at No. 14. Considering Alvarez’s history and the fact that he is a champion, the ranking seemed a little low.

UFC president Dana White agreed with that sentiment, but understood why Alvarez was not ranked in the top 10 just yet.

“Holy S**t. I didn’t know that,” White said when told of Alvarez’s No. 14 ranking. “I think it seems a little low, but you know what? It’s been a bad run for Eddie Alvarez. In my opinion, he’s lost a couple of the best years of his career because of what was done to him over there. We’re weeks away from finding out where he sits.”

Alvarez will have a tough task when he faces off against Cerrone, who is looking for his fourth win of 2014 and his fifth straight overall. If Alvarez is able to defeat Cerrone, you can expect him to catapult up the rankings and potentially be the next in line for a UFC title shot.
