Cain Velasquez is taking his time recovering from surgery, won’t rush into a fight this year. Should there be an interim champ?

Cain Velasquez vs Antonio Silva

Cain Velasquez is taking his time coming back from shoulder surgery, and as we know now from UFC Tonight and Cain’s coach, Javier Mendez, the heavyweight champ was medically cleared to use his right hand two weeks ago, but won’t rush into a fight. That fight, specifically, is against Fabricio Werdum, in Mexico City, and supposedly slated for November. There’s been rumblings on social media that Cain may not return to action until 2015, especially if he and Werdum schedule TUF: Latin America late in the year, so should there be an interim champ?

We’re realistically looking at a heavyweight division without a title fight for up to 15-16 months at the least if Cain doesn’t come back in 2014, and that’s a shame. With the UFC’s rating in a somewhat downward trend, and their inability to make stars showing more than ever, they need to put some importance around these matches. Thus, there needs to be a belt on the line, or Ronda Rousey will defend her title more in 6.5 months than Cain has over a 4+ year, on again off again span.

Werdum vs. the winner of JDS/Miocic for the interim belt? Or has JDS put himself in a position where he can’t fight Cain any time soon?
