Virgil Hunter thinks Andre Ward would beat Mayweather at 147

Virgil Hunter

Virgil Hunter, 2011 trainer of the year, knows his star trainee Andre Ward is one of the best fighters in the sport and he’s confident that he could beat anyone even pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Although Ward fighting at the 147-pound welterweight limit is never going to happen, Ward would have as good as chance as anyone to hand Mayweather the first loss of his career. The two have similar fight styles so it would be a defensive battle. That would make the bout a dream for boxing purist, but a nightmare for casual fans who want big hits and plenty of action.

If the two were to step in the ring the odds would be close to even, with Mayweather most likely getting the slight nod.

The likelihood of a Ward-Mayweather bout is as good as a Manny Pacquiao-Mayweather bout going down, so all though it’s fun to speculate what would go down in a possible fight; we will never get the see the fight play out in real life.

Hunter will most likely get a shot at Mayweather with Amir Khan, who Hunter began training in 2012, as he is the favorite to land the May 3 fight date at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev. with Money May.
