It’s a shame that the “Sugar” Shane Mosley-Paulie Malignaggi was cancelled, as that fight would given the boxing world a real sense of how much Mosley has left in the his tank after a lengthy career.

Malignaggi, the WBA welterweight champ, is riding a five-fight win streak since his TKO loss to Amir Khan in 2010 and would have been a tough opponent for Mosley.
Mosley is coming off four disappointing fights in a row, going 3-1 in those fights, losing to the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and fighting a game Sergio Mora to a 12-round draw.

Looking like a shell of his former self against three of the best the sport has to offer, it makes one wonder if Mosley should continue fighting at all. If he does continue on, fighting the likes of Marcos Maidana and Humberto Soto will tell us nothing, unless he loses, then we’ll really know it’s time for Sugar Shane to call it quits.

After fighting as a pro for the last 20 years, the 41-year-old Mosley’s skills have diminished some as most would expect and at this point he really seems to be fighting for paydays.

If a payday is what Mosley wants he should seek out a bigger fight, with the likes of Andre Berto, Devon Alexander or even Josesito Lopez to show if Lopez is a fluke in the welterweight division or if he is the real deal. Not only will these fights land him solid paydays, they will also give boxing fans an idea of where Mosley sits at this point of his career.

If Mosley wants people to pay attention, he needs to land a big-name fight to replace the one he almost had with Malignaggi, to show fans what the former pound-for-pound great has left and to net a nice payday addition.
