Mayweather: Maidana was dropped by Ortiz and couldn’t KO ‘lightweight’ Broner

Mayweather Maidana Ortiz dropped Maidana

With all of the talk of Marcos Maidana’s power heading into highly anticipated May3 battle with the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the pound-for-pound king brought up some goods points Wednesday talking to the media after the final press conference for the bout.

The most blaring is that Maidana, even though he knocked Mayweather protegee Adrein Broner down multiple times in their bout last year, he couldn’t finish off “The Problem” despite Broner being more accustom to fighting at 135-140 pounds.

There is no taking away the big win that Maidana handed Broner, which was Broner’s first professional loss, but with a lot of chatter about Mayweather possibly getting knocked out is outlandish.

Mayweather has been hit with some huge shots, most notably a big overhand right from “Sugar” Shane Mosley in their May 2010 bout, which buckled Manslaughter’s knees, but he fought on, regained his composure and won the bout handily.

Sure, the Mosley bout was four years ago, but with how Mayweather has preserved himself in the ring with his elite defensive ability, he should be able to take anything thrown his way come May 3.

Also noting that former Mayweather foe Victor Ortiz was able to knock Maidana down in their bout back in 2009, that point is pretty convincing too.  Maidana was dropped three times in the six-round bout, but was able to fight through and stop Ortiz in the sixth round.

Maidana was a different fighter then, as he is still a action-first guy, but he is smarter about that chances he takes in the ring, especially since teaming up with Robert Garcia. Since linking up with Garcia in 2012, Maidana has went 4-0 and has looked a lot more fundamentally sound in the ring.

Sure, Maidana could hang with Mayweather for a bit with how he’s looked lately, there is no question about that, but beating Mayweather via decision will be a tough task. One that isn’t very likely to happen, just as a KO win for Maidana isn’t as well.
