Alfredo Angulo on weight changes, De La Rosa and hopes of Cotto bout

Angulo Mayhem

Alfredo Angulo suffered two-straight knockout losses to two of the best middleweights in the game in Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and will now look to get his career in order against James De La Rosa on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Miadana headed“Mayhem” Showtime PPV card.

In fact, Angulo has lost three of his last five bouts via KO—add in a 2011 TKO loss to James Kirkland—and had a yearlong layoff in the middle of all that due to immigration issues.

The 26-year-old De La Rosa has just two losses in his 24 professional bouts but those two loses came within his last four bouts.

Another factor is a period of inactivity of De La Rosa’s own , as he as only fought once per year in 2011, 2012 and 2013 due to promotional issues and testing positive for using a diuretic. He has already fought in 2014 once that came in the form of a TKO win over Fabian Reyes last month.

Angulo will be facing a fighter looking to redeem a once promising career, as he looks to forge ahead with his own in a new weight division.

After his last bout being at a contracted weight of 155 pounds with Alvarez, Saturday’s bout will be Angulo’s first in the 160-pound division, although the contracted weight is at 162 pounds.

Not having to fight to make weight as much, Alfredo should be stronger than he has looked in his last couple of bouts, where we saw him not get much going.

Expect Angulo to put forth a worthy effort in his hopes to land a bout with middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto in the future,  after taking on a few more bouts at middleweight.
