UFC statement on Jon Jones entering drug treatment facility

Chael Sonnen vs Jon Jones

Just days after his incredible victory over formerly undefeated Olympian Daniel Cormier at UFC 182, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has entered a drug treatment facility following a positive test for benzoylecgonine, the main metabolite in cocaine.

Yahoo Sports first reported that Jones failed a random drug test administered by the Nevada Athletic Commission on December 4th, about a month before Jones defended his title against Cormier.

UFC released a statement yesterday on Jones’ entering drug rehab:

“We support UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ decision to enter a drug treatment facility to address his recent issue. While we are disappointed in the failed test, we applaud him for making this decision to enter a drug treatment facility. Jon is a strong, courageous fighter inside the Octagon, and we expect him to fight this issue with the same poise and diligence. We commend him on his decision, and look forward to him emerging from this program a better man as a result.”

And thoughts from UFC president Dana White:

“I am proud of Jon Jones for making the decision to enter a drug treatment facility. I’m confident that he’ll emerge from this program like the champion he truly is.”

The post-fight drug tests for UFC 182 have yet to be released as of this writing, so if Jones potentially tests positive in that test, this entire story could turn on its head.
