One month from now the first female fight to ever go down inside the UFC Octagon will be finished. We know it’s MMA and anything can happen, so who truly knows who will win, but by the end of the fight we may be seeing a paradigm-shifting focus on the sport we love. Ronda Rousey, love her or hate her, is a special personality. Look no further than UFC President Dana White for an example of her head-turning powers. Dana said women would never fight in the UFC. Then, three or four Ronda armbars later, not only are women going to be in the UFC but they are headlining a PPV. What else? Dana says Ronda will be gaining the attention of the largest media blitz in the history of the sport. Now we just need to remember that Ronda’s opponent, Liz Carmouche, is on the radar and is dangerous. But so are a lot of other women Ronda has decimated.
Could this propel the UFC and MMA into a more mainstream category of sport?
“Right now we haven’t even started promoting that fight,” “In the lead up to this fight, you’re going to see coverage of Ronda Rousey like this sport has never seen. She’s going to be everywhere. The Los Angeles Times has been following her for about a month and she’s going to be getting a front page story. HBO Real Sports just got done shooting her, Time Magazine, everyone. The list goes on-and-on. The list of media sources that are going to covering this, no fighter in the history of UFC will have the kind of coverage Ronda will have.
“Nobody ever, if you look at all the guys like Chuck Liddell, Tito, Matt Hughes, nobody in the history of this sport has brought attention to the sport like Ronda Rousey will leading up to that fight. The mainstream media she’ll be pulling is ridiculous. Just the story in Forbes , she’s being put in the company of Durant, LeBron James and Tom Brady. That’s what these dorks on the Internet don’t see.”
We certainly look forward to a February of Ronda.
