Devastating news has struck the world of professional mixed martial arts on Thursday January 12. Conveyed by the Boston Herald after a recent orthopedist and neurologist report by his physicians, UFC featherweight contender Kenny Florian may be forced into early retirement due to a lumbar herniated disk in his lower back. Florian, who has suffered with back problems in the past, re-injured his back in November during a physical training session while lifting weights and has experienced serious complications since. The news comes as a heavy burden to the UFC star as he questions his possible future as a fighter.

It’s possible, unfortunately,” Florian told the Boston Herald. “I’ve kind of been going back-and-forth with some of the doctors, so it’s possible. I’m going to see. As of right now, obviously I can’t compete and train like I was at all. I’m just kind of doing what I can and hoping that things heal up and get better. I’m just kind of in a holding pattern. That’s why I decided to do this commentary for the time being and take this next six months to really heal up and try to make some money on the side. It sucks. The last couple of months I’ve just been figuring out what’s going on and what I’m going to do.”

Kenny Florian first busted unto the MMA scene as a member of the first ever Ultimate Fighter competition back in 2005 going on to advance to the finale against Diego Sanchez. Since that time he has made his ascent up the MMA rankings with a professional record of 14-6 obtaining major victories over tough contenders like Joe Lauzon, Joe Stevenson and Takanori Gomi; throughout his time in the Zuffa corporation, he has fought for a title on three separate occasions.

Aside from his accolades as a fighter, Kenny Florian has also done color commentating for “MMA Live” and “UFC Tonight” which could serve as a possible alternative to replace his occupation as a fighter. Whatever the future holds for theBostonnative one thing is for certain Kenny Florian will be remembered as an exciting fighter who always looked to put on a great show for the fans and finish fights in grand fashion.
