Phil Davis is extremely confident about fighting Lyoto Machida: “My plan is to go back to Rio and get another submission win.”

I’m an admitted Lyoto Machida fan boy. I feel that when I watch Lyoto Machida in the cage, I’m watching a master work his art. Watching him dodge punches, counter perfectly and in general keep the utmost discipline as he fights that it doesn’t get much better in martial arts than Lyoto. That said: I hate this Phil Davis fight. I think Phil has the exact toolset to destroy Lyoto. He has the size and the ability to bring Lyoto down and do what he wants. Phil has an underrated submission game, but he’s tapped Tim Boetsch, Alexander Gustaffson and Wagner Prado, so his rise up the rankings in the light heavyweight division is absolutely legit. It just had a stumbling block by the name of Rashad Evans.

So Phil is rightfully heading into his August 3rd fight with Lyoto Machida at UFC 163 with a boatload of confidence, and this is what he had to say:

“What makes me so confident in this run for the title? I know what I’m willing to do to make it happen. Machida was next in line for a title shot. Winning against him will put me up in the contender race. What makes Lyoto Machida so unique is that he is quite effective at catching people rushing in. Anyone who comes straight at him, he usually punches. I’m gonna stick to my bread and butter. If his tricks are not working that night, it will be a rough night. My plan is to go back to Rio and get another submission win and be able to build my legacy that way.”
