UFC Fight Night 49 prelims results and recap

MMA: UFC Fight Night 49-Dariush vs Martin

The second event of the UFC doubleheader has begun as UFC Fight Night 49 is underway from the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The prelims began with an exciting flyweight bout between Wilson Reis and Joby Sanchez. After three rounds of back and forth action, Reis was given the unanimous decision nod.

In the first prelim on Fox Sports 2, Ben Saunders made his return to the UFC in epic fashion. After getting taken down by Chris Heatherly early, Saunders immediately transitioned into rubber guard to stifle Chris’ offense from the guard. Moments later Saunders locked in a deep omoplata and forced Heatherly to tap. The omoplata finish was the first of it’s kind in UFC history.

The next bout was a bantamweight bout featuring two young prospects trying to make their name inside the UFC. After a hard fought three round battle, Matt Hobar took home the unanimous decision victory over Aaron Phillips as he utilized his impressive takedowns throughout the fight.

The fourth bout of the evening was a lightweight bout between Beneil Dariush and Tony Martin. After Martin started strong in the first, he faded badly and looked gassed in round two. Dariush capitalized on Martin being exhausted and was able to get the takedown en route to the arm triangle submission finish.

In the main event of the prelims, Neil Magny became the first fighter in the UFC to earn four wins in 2014. In a closely contested bout, Magny pulled out a hard earned unanimous decision victory over Alex Garcia. Two judges saw the bout 30-27 for Magny, but the fight was much closer than that suggests.
