Last night Spike TV finally played host to Bellator, stacking the card with two title fights and three fairly high profile opening round matches for this season’s light heavyweight tournament. Opening the show and garnering over 1.1 million viewers was the featherweight championship bout between challenger Patricio “Pitbull” Freire and champion Pat Curran. The fight was close, and was in a word, fantastic, displaying the skills of both fighters in a fight that will do wonders for their name value. It was technical, fast paced (after the first round) and showed us that their is depth in the featherweight division outside the UFC. In the end, Curran barely edged out Freire in a razor-thin split-decision.

We caught up with the champ after his 25 minute war inside the Bellator cage to discuss his perception on the fight, his future and what he was thinking when he heard the words “split-decision”

I was ready for anything but he didn’t come at me like I was anticipating, we were finding (our) distance, but we got the first round out of the way… We just picked up the pace after that. My corner told me I won it for sure, I was pretty confident I won it but when it came down to the split-decision my heart slowed down and dropped, and I thought that maybe I did lose. There are bad judges out there and anything could happen.
