Lesnar vs. Overeem: Clash Of The Titans

Brock Lesnar vs Alistair Overeem 450x260 300x173 Lesnar vs. Overeem: Clash Of The Titans

December 30, 2011 will mark the biggest heavyweight bout in the UFC to date, announced via LA Times and later confirmed on Twitter by Dana White, former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will return to the octagon against newly signed, Alistair Overeem. In addition to the announcement of the bout, White also confirmed that the winner would be the number one contender for the heavyweight title.

Facing against a veteran fighter with superior striking in Overeem, the former champion will be tested in what could be called the most important fight of his career. His last bout, in which Lesnar lost the title to Cain Velsaquez showed fans and the world that the big man does not like to be hit in the face; Overeem posses world class kickboxing and boxing to take Lesnar out of his comfort zone and possibly hand him a loss.

Alongside striking, the submission advantage can also be given to Overeem who looks for guillotines and could easily pull it off in anticipation of the shot, given the fight goes to the ground. Besides the chance for a title shot being on the line, this fight will truly determine who belongs in the top rankings of the world’s best heavyweights. Fans have clamored for a long time about “The Demolition Man” being able to tangle with the UFC where others have criticized Lesnar as a “pro wrestler” and are waiting to write him off.

When the cage locks in Las Vegas at the years closing, all the questions and speculations will come to an end. Talented in their own regards, this is a fight that makes the most sense for both men in their careers. Overeem has faced lopsided opponents thru his MMA career and will now have a chance to prove detractors wrong as he takes on the Zuffa roster; Lesnar has faced off amongst the best in the world (Mir, Couture, and Velasquez) and has seen both sides of the decision. Whichever way the outcome is, one thing is for certain, someone will be put to sleep and the big men will throw leather to ring in 2012.
