The cut was bad, but not horrible. The reason why they wanted to stop it is because of the blood pouring into Jones’ eye, but like a gladiator, Jones and John McCarthy begged the doctor not to stop the fight, and so it went on into the decisive 5th round.
It’s rather storybook. Hell, it’s cinematic. We basically saw a Rocky fight last night at UFC 165, and it was thrilling. I’m going to rewatch the fight as soon as I find time after the NFL and in-between GTA V sessions.
Back to the order at hand: So Dana White revealed this in-Ocatagon information to Ariel Helwani post-165 last night:
“I don’t know if you heard, but the doctors were going to stop the fight in the last round because of the cut, and Jones begged him not to stop the fight. And from what I understand McCarthy did too – pleaded with them not to stop the fight.”
