Jake Ellenberger: “People have given Lawler too much respect; You can’t do that in MMA”

The loss to Rory MacDonald must’ve stung Jake Ellenberger. He was on his way back to building a three-fight winning streak in the deadly UFC welterweight division, but a unanimous decision loss now puts him squarely back in the middle of the top ten. That all can change, however, when Ellenberger takes on Robbie Lawler, a man who would have the welterweight title around his waste if he hadn’t been taken down and laid upon for 1 minute (think about that).

A win here puts Ellenberger right back “in the mix” as they say. Lawler is pretty much the consensus #2 in the division, and if he beats Robbie, and especially if he finishes him, you’re looking at a contender fight.

Our Michael Mardones caught up with Ellenberger at Ronda Rousey’s gym, Glendale Fight Club. A place I have rolled many times. I miss it dearly. They talked Ellenberger’s upcoming fight with Lawler, and how far too much respect is given to the man who has 18 knockouts to his name. Hmm.
