Georges St-Pierre: “It would be easier for me to fight at 155 than 185”

Long time Welterweight UFC Champion Georges St-Pierre has teased a possible move to Middleweight for a super fight with Anderson Silva. “Rush” indicates it would be easier for him to step down a weight class instead of packing on a few pounds.

“I don’t do much cutting. It would be easier for me to go fight at 155 than fighting at 185. I would be more at my weight naturally at 155. There’s guys at 155 that walk around at 190, like me. They think I’m big because I have a large frame, but I’m not a big guy. I’m not thick.”

So is the real super fight GSP versus Benson Henderson? If St-Pierre is so worried about the weight differential with Anderson “The Spider” Silva” then maybe he oughta drop to the division down below? The titleholder there is also calling his name, says he’d go up,  unconcerned about weighing the same as GSP on fight night.

GSP with more on why he and Silva’s hypothetical super fight is unfair.

“Anderson Silva is very big. He’s 230 pounds. He’s a very big guy walking around, and I’m 190 pounds. It’s a lot of weight difference. If this fight happens one day, we’re going to have to decide what weight class and everything. If he can make 170, he can weigh 170, I can weigh 170, and everything is fine.”

The champ is interested in a showdown with Silva only if “The Spider” decides to drop to 170 lbs. So Silva’s going to have to lose weight, or step up and take on Jon “Bones” Jones.

But, hold it right there, what is all this talk about dream match ups when we’ve got “Silva vs. Weidman” scheduled for UFC 162 later this year? Are we counting out Chris Weidman, who is undefeated in his journey to become the best in the world?

Georges has recently been reluctant in signing the contract to face Johny Hendricks and it could be because he is waiting to scope out one more blueprint on how to beat Anderson Silva. Chris Weidman trains frequently with Renzo Gracie, as does Pierre.

If Anderson is dethroned by the young buck, Weidman has already promised an instant rematch. Maybe Weidman can start a rivalry between he and Silva that will make everyone forget about Silva/Jones and Silva/GSP, much like Chael Sonnen did when he showed up and managed to beat up the world’s best MMA fighter of all time.

Could a superfight rely on the underdog Chris Weidman’s performance at UFC 162?

We’ll have to wait to see how this thing unravels. As of right now, Pierre is playing it safe, putting all the pressure on Silva to decide where to go — 170 or 205 — but a Weidman win can put a shutter on things.

The Big question is why St. Pierre wants to move to 155 pounds? He’s naturally 190 lbs, just five pounds above Silva’s middleweight domain (185). So how a fifteen pound drop would be “easier,” is beyond me.
