Benson Henderson says only the “mentally weak” take steroids.

imagesJeff Monson made an interesting and, in typical Monson style, incendiary comment a few years back basically saying that all athletes should be on steroids, that way there’s an equal playing field. Although that is something to consider for at least half a second, Monson doesn’t seem to factor in the damage steroids and certain PEDs do to someone’s body of years of use. Damaging your heart, shortening your career, and the obvious shunning from the sport in which you make your living are all factors that play into the game of gaining an edge. You can’t make money if you pee hot and can’t fight.

Now TRT is on the rise and on the tip of everyone’s tongue. UFC lightweight champ Ben Henderson is the latest to speak out about steroids and their users, which have plagued sports for years.

“My thing with the whole steroid thing and whatnot – I understand part of a competitor’s nature is to take whatever edge, whatever advantage you can get to be the best,””To that I just say if I’m facing a person – it happened in college wrestling, sadly it shouldn’t, but it happened in college wrestling, people on steroids and whatnot – if I know someone is mentally weak enough to take steroids, ‘Oh, I need the extra edge, I need to do this’, and they know it’s illegal, they know it’s wrong and they do it, if you’re so mentally weak that you have to take steroids, me, five rounds in the cage with you? I will destroy you. Cause you are mentally weak.

“So I’m all for it, if you want to take drugs go ahead and take drugs. I don’t really care, but I’m going to whoop your butt because you are mentally weak and that’s where you win fights is in the mental stage. If you’re weak enough to break down, I’m going to kill you.”

Interesting to say the least, but some have said the use of TRT is like a diabetic getting insulin. What if the athlete truly thinks that testosterone replacement is fair and just, which it might be? This is like the 50 Shades of Gray: MMA edition without all the sex. If we can see Dan Henderson fight into his forties with the help of TRT it’s a great thing, but how is it moderated, and did mother nature intend it?
