You have likely already heard the unfortunate news that UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez injured his knee and is out of his scheduled title defense against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180 in Mexico.

Instead of scrapping the main event altogether, the UFC opted to put the interim title up for grabs, and asked Mark Hunt to step in on just under four weeks notice.

The “Super Samoan”, who is never one to pass up a fight or let his fans down, took the bout planned for November 15th. Here was Hunt’s initial reaction on Instagram:

Mexico here I come thanks god and ufc for opportunity.

In a recent interview with The New Zealand Herald, Hunt breaks down the events leading up to him taking the interim title fight:

I was taking the kids to school and then the next minute I got a phone call from Dana and they asked about fighting for the interim world title. So it all happened pretty fast and if anyone can do it, I’m your man. I’ve always believed I was the best fighter on the planet.

Hunt went on to explain that it will be a tough weight cut for him, but he is as ready as he will ever be. Imagine fight fans, Mark Hunt could potentially be a UFC champion in just one month.
