Although UFC Flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson defended his title in style in the main event of the mammoth UFC 178 card this past weekend, the highlight storyline of the event came from Conor McGregor’s incredible dispatching of No. 5 ranked Featherweight Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier.

McGregor and Poirier went back and forth quite a bit during fight week, but in the end, Poirier proved to be no match for McGregor as he was knocked out in just 1:46 into the very first round.

Aside from the astonishing finish itself, what was truly incredible was the fact that Poirier was deemed as McGregor’s first true test in his MMA career. Prior to the fight, McGregor said numerous times that he believed Poirier was not his stiffest competition to date, and he would finish him in the first round.

Well, McGregor not only backed up his talk, he did it with a sensational finish on Saturday night, proving he is a top contender in the UFC’s Featherweight division.

As for Poirier? The agony of defeat is immeasurable, as he had supreme confidence he would halt the McGregor hype train. Instead, he found himself unconscious on the mat early on in the first round asking what happened to referee Herb Dean.

After the fight, Poirier sent out two tweets, exemplifying just how bitter this loss was.

With Poirier having only lost to top contenders such as Chan Sung Jung, Cub Swanson, and now Conor McGregor, he seems doomed to be a Featherweight gatekeeper unless something changes very quickly.
