Roy Jones Jr.: Hopkins bores opponents so they don’t perform

Jones JR. on Hopkins-Kovalev

Roy Jones Jr. has experience against Bernard Hopkins, who fights Sergey Kovalev Nov. 8, so he has the insight many others don’t when it comes to why Hopkins is so tough to fight.

Jones beat Hopkins by unanimous decision back in 1993, then Hopkins got his revenge 17 years later in 2010, besting Jones Jr. via his own unanimous decision.

Jones said that Hopkins bores fighters he is facing, which helps even out the strength factor that the younger fighters “The Alien” takes on by not giving them enough excitement to bring out their best.

Although not entirely true, there is some truth in their, as Hopkins is a gritty fighter and his style will frustrate about anyone who steps into the ring with the almost-50-year-old Philadelphia native.

Jones was spot on in his theory that if Kovalev can put the pressure on Hopkins early and even hurt him, that he stands a good chance to give the ageless wonder, in Hopkins a loss.

If Kovalev allows Hopkins to frustrate him, it doesn’t matter how much power he posses, he will not be able to string the right combination of punches together to open Hopkins up for a KO shot.

Although Jones hasn’t aged quite as gracefully in the ring as Hopkins has, he still is one of the most knowledgeable figures in the sport today and most of his analysts is something to that should be listened to by anyone wanting an educated opinion of a fight.
