Golovkin KO’s Rubio in 2

GGG vs rubio weigh in boxing news hbo boxing gennady golovkin marco antonio rubio

Despite Marco Antonio Rubio coming into the bout at 181 pounds, nine pounds heavier than Gennady Golovkin, GGG was still able to make easy work of Rubio en route to a Round 2 KO victory at the StubHub Center in Carson, California Saturday night.

In a bout that many felt wouldn’t last the full 12 rounds, Golovkin jumped out to a quick start and never looked back.

Golovkin hurt Rubio with a huge uppercut in the middle of Round 2 and as he was covering himself up after that power shot, GGG landed a strange left hook angled down at Rubio’s upper head, sending him to the canvas.

Rubio laid there and waited and attempted to get up after the referee counted to nine, and he failed to beat the refs 10-count. It appeared that he could have went on in the bout, but the two big shots that Rubio took before meeting the canvas convinced him otherwise.

With how easy the bout was for Golovkin one has to wonder if any of the middleweight division’s other top dogs in Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be eager to get into the ring with GGG. There is also talks of Julio Cesar Chavez fighting Golovkin, but as we have seen, Chavez Jr. was reluctant to face him earlier in the summer and the breakdown in negotiations was reportedly due to money issues.

Post fight HBO commentator, Max Kellerman, went on about Andre Ward wanting his shot at GGG, but with his over year-long layoff and lawsuit fled against him by the late Dan Goossen, who knows if we’ll see Ward even fight anytime soon.

No matter who Golovkin fights next, he has quickly become a star in boxing, as made evident by the sellout crowd at the StubHub Center.

If Golovkin can get big name fighters to step up and fight him, his star could grow as big as anyone in the sport today, as nothing satisfies fans more than a powerful fighter, and GGG may very well be the most explosive fighter in the sport today.
