Freddie Roach: ‘Manny Pacquiao & Amir Khan have speed/power advantage over Floyd Mayweather’

Roach on Pac, Cotto Khan Mayweather Feb 2015 FH

Freddie Roach is in a position that no other trainer is in with the biggest fighters who are mulling over who to fight next. Being Manny Pacquiao’s and Miguel Cotto’s trainer and also the former trainer of Amir Khan, all of which have been mentioned as possible foes for Floyd Mayweather’s May 2 bout, he has an insight no other figure in the sport has.

Although there will always be a biased opinion from a member of a fighters camp, Roach can offer information on the possible match ups like no one else can.

Roach said that he prefers that Pacquiao face Mayweather out of the small opponent pool, as the boxing world has been aching to see the fight for pound-for-pound supremacy.

“My first choice is Manny, Roach said. “Because we’ve been waiting for so long for this.”

Despite wanting what will obviously be one of, if no the biggest fight in the last 20 years, in Mayweather-Pacquiao, Roach didn’t discredit Cotto, still liking his chances in a rematch against Money May.

“I do think he (Cotto) can fight a better fight than the first time and I do think he can win the fight,” he said.

Despite Khan finding himself on the outside looking in in regards to a possible Mayweather bout, Roach reiterated he thinks his former fighter could best Money May.

“I did pick Amir as one of the who could beat Mayweather, because of his athleticism and his speed.”

Roach might find himself on the opposite side of Khan, as his name has been brought up as an option for Pacquiao and Cotto, should both of them miss on a Mayweather super fight.

With Mayweather looking just a tad slower than he was a few years ago, a fighter with speed can give Mayweather fits, but his top-notch counter punching ability always gives him a way out of trouble, even with a quick-handed foe.

As the world waits for the official announcement to whom Mayweather will face on May 2, the debate will go on to who can give the self proclaimed, “The Best Ever” the best fight in the ring.

No matter who anyone thinks will give Mayweather the best fight, we all know that the world won’t be satisfied if his next bout is anything other than a Pacquiao showdown. With all signs looking good as far as the fight of the decade, the boxing community might finally get what they’ve been hoping for for the last several years.
