Floyd Mayweather: ‘Khan’s name holds no weight. My focus is Manny Pacquiao!’

After Amir Khan took care of business last Saturday night, easily beating Devon Alexander via unanimous decision,  many in the boxing community, including Khan himself thought he set him self up for a Floyd Mayweather Jr. showdown in the spring of 2015. Mayweather has other thoughts.

Speaking to press at the WBC Convention at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Monday, Money May discredited Khan, and explained his focus for his next fight.

“Amir Khan his name holds no weight,” Mayweather said. “No one knows who Amir Khan is, but those involved in boxing. My focus is Manny Pacquiao, let’s make it happen.”

This is the second time within a week that Mayweather has addressed a potential Pacman showdown with the May 2 date, as he called the Filipino star out on Showtime last Friday. This marks the first times he’s set a potential date for a Pacquiao fight publicly, which has the sports world abuzz.

Mayweather listed a number of reason’s that a megafight with Pacquiao has yet to happen and citing drug testing and monetary issues.

“The first time we didn’t fight because of random blood and urine testing,” Mayweather said. “Second time we didn’t fight because he didn’t want to take the $40 million (Mayweather offered).”

As talks once again heat up over the two best fighters of the last decade, Mayweather said that Top Rank President, Bob Arum is already bringing up a new excuse not to make that fight happen.

“Bob Arum is trying to throw another excuse out there, talking about they don’t want to fight May 2nd, why not? Let’s make the fight happen.”

Arum presumably said that he didn’t want the bout the take place on May 2 (via The Ring), calling it disrespectful to Mexican fans, but it’s more likely because speculation is that Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are all but set to fight on that date, which takes place during Cinco De May weekend.

No one has ever questioned Mayweather fighting around the Mexican holiday before, as he’s done so five times since 2007, where he defeated Oscar De La Hoya.

So, with Khan presumably out of contention for Mayweather’s next bout, it would seem the possibility for a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout looks even stronger.

But with all of the he said, he said, stuff going around, there is still serious doubt the fight gets made, which would leave Mayweather a small crop of potential opponents. If that is the case it could mean that Khan might get his ticket to the Mayweather Sweepstakes by default in the end.
